"WHEN STUDENTS ARE GIVEN THE ABILITY TO LEARN IN A PRACTICAL HANDS-ON ENVIRONMENT, THEY ARE OFTEN ENGAGED, STIMULATED AND WANT TO LEARN AS MUCH AS POSSIBLE. THE STUDENT'S APPETITE FOR LEARNING INCREASES AND THEY ARE MORE WILLING TO LISTEN AND PAY ATTENTION IF THEY HAVE A MORE PRACTICAL OR LIFE LIKE TASK TO COMPLETE."
English Language Arts Our reading and writing instruction is 100% aligned to the Arizona College and Career Readiness Standards. Students receive 90 minutes of reading instruction a day.
Teachers utilize Lucy Calkins' Reading Units of Study to provide students with 15-30 minutes of whole group instruction each day. During this time the class learns a specific skill together that is modeled for them and they are given time to practice collaboratively. During the following 60 minutes students work towards their own independent reading goals through small group instruction and Daily 5. Teachers use Fountas and Pinnell's Guided Reading program during small group instruction to meet students where they are and lead them forward with intention and precision. This ensures that all of our students make growth as readers and receive instruction that matches their individual learning goals. While the teacher is working with small groups, students are working towards their individual reading goals through Daily 5. Daily 5 provides authentic reading and writing opportunities:
